Since your windows are an important part of your home, it’s in your best interest to ensure that they remain in good condition for as long as possible. Otherwise, they can negatively impact your home’s overall look. With that in mind, you should make it a priority to have your windows inspected every now and then. That way, any defects can be found and repaired immediately. But what exactly are the defects that can be found on your windows during home inspections?
Damaged or Missing Window Glazing
Most windows come with glazing, a putty material that seals the edges of the window’s glass to ensure it remains stable. Usually, this putty is soft and pliable, but once applied to your windows, it will harden and become a great sealer that keeps your glass secure. However, as time goes by, glazing can also crack and chip, leaving gaps around the glass. As such, it’s one of the most common defects that can be found during a home inspection. According to experts, however, this is a sign that your window is at the end of its lifespan, so it may need a replacement sooner rather than later.
Broken Sash Cords
If you purchased an older home with older windows, there’s a possibility they’re still operated by heavy, cylinder-shaped weights tucked inside the jamb, pulleys at the windows top edge of the window and ropes to tie the system together. When you need to open the window, the weights tucked inside provide the right counterbalance to prevent them from sliding closed. Unfortunately, over time, the cotton cording breaks, making it difficult to keep the windows closed or opened. Thankfully, for this issue, you won’t have to get replacement windows to fix the problem; instead, you can just have the cording replaced to restore the window to good condition.
Condensation
Finally, condensation between the window panes is another common defect that can be found on your windows during a home inspection and is usually a sign that the window seals have broken. This allows the gas sandwiched between the panes to escape, reducing the window’s insulation properties and resulting in condensation. With that in mind, if your windows are experiencing this problem, consider having them replaced as soon as possible.
