Renewal by Andersen® double hung windows are beautiful, durable and easy to clean and maintain. We give you tips on how to clean them here.
Prepare the Area
It’s important to keep your work area clean before you begin. Remove all window treatments, and have them cleaned separately. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and dirt around the window area. Since you will be handling water later, remove the carpets, or cover the areas around the windows with tarp. Lastly, take a chair with a sturdy back, and position it with the back turned to the window. This will be used later when it’s time to clean the windows.
Ditch the Ladders
One of the most common problems with cleaning windows is that it’s very difficult to clean the outside-facing part. For homes with upper stories, difficult can become dangerous. Fortunately, Renewal by Andersen replacement windows are designed to be cleaned with ease, regardless of the style you choose.
Cleaning the Double Hung Window
Start the cleaning process by lifting the interior grilles from the glass near the edge of the frame. Disengage the lock, and open the lower sash by a couple of inches. Disengage the wash assist tabs at the frame, and then carefully pull the sash towards you.
Rest the sash on the chair back and proceed with cleaning it using any commercially available window glass cleaner or a solution made of 70% water and 30% vinegar. Use a squeegee to remove excess water, and wipe it dry with a clean cloth. Slide the wash assist tabs all the way to the top, and carefully slide the upper sash all the way down. Next, tilt it like the lower sash, and proceed with cleaning. Reverse the process to put the sashes back.
