The windows in your house provide natural light, ventilation and a reduction in energy consumption. They’re also important for homeowners’ mental and physical well-being as well as contributing to the value of their property when it’s time to sell. However, no matter how well you clean your windows, they have recently become opaque and foggy, and your costs have risen beyond your expectations. This is probably due to failing window seals. What can cause window seals to fail? What can you do?
Degradation due to the Elements
There is a limit to what window seals can tolerate, although they are built to withstand whatever the weather may be. When certain varieties of seals are regularly drenched in a lot of water, the water can penetrate behind them and cause them to rise. Because the seal will no longer be flush with the frame of the window, water and cold air will be able to permeate. When water comes into contact with the metal sections of some types of weatherstripping, rust can form, which if not addressed as quickly as possible will lead to corrosion.
Aging
Most window seals do not come with a lifetime guarantee, and this is especially true for older windows that have been in use for a long period. You’ll notice that older forms of weather protection fail at a higher rate. In that sense, you can guarantee that your windows’ weatherstripping stays in good working order by replacing it as needed.
Mold Formation
Mold can easily compromise the window seal if the condensation on your window is not cleaned away regularly. When a seal is constructed of a material like rubber, this can cause it to lose its effectiveness since rubber is a porous material, making its surface susceptible to gradual degradation. If you discover any mold or discoloration, clean it right away with an alcohol-based cleaner to destroy the spores or with vinegar if you want a more natural cleaner with little to no emission of irritants, unlike with solutions with Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
