Small spaces have long been viewed as disadvantageous, especially in terms of living spaces. If you are currently occupying a small space, whether by choice or due to other circumstances, then you’re well aware of the challenges that come with the territory.
Here are four design tips and hacks that can help make your compact space seem bigger than it actually is.
1. Clear the Clutter
While you don’t have to throw out everything you currently own to make way for the newer stuff you’ll be owning, you have to make sure your prized possessions are stored or displayed properly so that the space won’t feel cramped. Stash trinkets and other odds and ends away from view to make the room seem more spacious, at least visually.
2. Let the Light Inside
Another design hack for a bigger space is to flood the room with the right amount of lighting. Now, there are various ways to achieve a brighter space, such as switching to LED light bulbs or even adding more light sources. However, a more cost- and energy-efficient alternative is to utilize natural light, otherwise known as daylighting. Put your replacement windows to good use by keeping the blinds or curtains drawn during the day. Just make sure your windows can block harmful rays from the sun.
3. Keep it Plain and Simple
Busy patterns and bold prints take up space so stick to plain or neutral colors as much as possible. Keep things visually interesting by experimenting with texture. Think sheer fabrics, subdued floral patterns, striped upholstery and the like.
4. Mirrors on the Wall
Another visual trick is to add reflective surfaces like mirrors to enlarge a room. Not a fan of mirrored walls? Incorporate reflective surfaces into your furniture, such as your cabinets or drawers.
